Nine of Wands Reversed

“My brain doesn’t work anymore.” I had spent the morning volunteering as a poll monitor in the hot Florida sun, and by the end of the day, I did not have the energy to contribute any additional insight into the weekly meal planning. All I know is that I’m looking forward to the Feta Tomato Pasta. Earlier I shared with my community that I was tired of being resilient. Once again, the weary warrior from the Nine of Wands is back, this time reversed.

Every week, we explore a Tarot card because Tarot is rich in symbology and helps us tap into our intuition.

A tarot card labeled IX showing a vigilant figure in a tunic gripping a tall staff, standing before a row of eight upright staffs with small leaves. Rolling green hills and a blue sky fill the background. Nine of Wands

Card of the Week: The Nine of Wands Reversed

If this weary, bandaged person were upside down in real life, they may feel as if there is no solid ground. Last week, we interpreted them as having just stepped out from behind their protective walls. Upside down, the boundaries disappear, and the staff is their anchor.

The Pattern It Reveals

The idea of stability seems quaint given all the recent global upheaval. Many parents feel financial and time pressures and wonder if they will ever feel upright again. If you are barely hanging on, this one’s for you. Last week we explored if anyone was there to build us up. No one else shows up in this card. We hold the staff in hand and have a few more behind us. As my friend Yinka says, if you don’t have resources, you must become resourceful.

The Question Worth Asking

How do you rebuild when everything has been turned upside down?

After I said I was tired of being resilient, I opened a video that a friend of mine had sent earlier. The person asked us to find the lesson in challenges rather than questioning “Why me?” The figure in the Nine of Wands looks determined to move forward. A member of my community reflected my thoughts on resilience back to me as, “When does it get to be easy?” I realized that easy is a mindset.

One Small Experiment to Try This Week

When you feel like everything is coming to you all at once, give yourself a minute. Pretend you are a character in a show where time slows down, and you hear their decision-making process. It’s okay to pause and find an anchor. My anchor is my breath. Yours may be music or movement.

When I realized that I was exhausted, I did not push through. We were not grocery shopping until tomorrow. My kids are a little older, so I trusted them to finish. If they were younger, I would allow myself to go to bed and tackle it refreshed the next day.
